چکیده

Due to their exceptional mechanical and chemical properties natural abundance, cellulose nanocrystals (CNCs) are promising building blocks of sustainable polymer composites. However, the rapid gelation CNC dispersions has generally limited CNC-based composites low fractions, in which remains dominant phase. Here we report on formulation processing crosslinked CNC-epoxy with a fraction exceeding 50 wt%. The microstructure comprises sub-micrometer aggregates CNCs polymer, is analogous lamellar structure nacre promotes toughening mechanisms associated bulk ductility, despite brittle behavior at nanoscale. At 63 wt% CNCs, exhibit hardness 0.66 GPa fracture toughness 5.2 MPa m $$^{1/2}$$ . this all-organic material comparable aluminum alloys, centimeter scale that wood cell walls. We show 3D composite objects can be shaped from gel precursors by direct-write printing, casting, machining. formulation, route, insights gained our multiscale approach applied broadly highly loaded nanocomposites.

Synergistic toughening of bioinspired poly(vinyl alcohol)-clay-nanofibrillar cellulose artificial nacre.

Inspired by the layered aragonite platelet/nanofibrillar chitin/protein ternary structure and integration of extraordinary strength and toughness of natural nacre, artificial nacre based on clay platelet/nanofibrillar cellulose/poly(vinyl alcohol) is constructed through an evaporation-induced self-assembly technique. The synergistic toughening effect from clay platelets and nanofibrillar cellul...

Nanoscale Deformation and Toughening Mechanisms of Nacre

We found direct evidence that a single-crystal-like aragonite platelet is essentially assembled with aragonite nanoparticles. The aragonite nanoparticles are readily oriented and assembled into pseudo-single-crystal aragonite platelets via screw dislocation and amorphous aggregation, which are two dominant mediating mechanisms between nanoparticles during biomineralization. The heat treatment b...

Characterization of Epoxy Composites Reinforced with Wax Encapsulated Microcrystalline Cellulose

The effect of paraffin wax encapsulated microcrystalline cellulose (EMC) particles on the mechanical and physical properties of EMC/epoxy composites were investigated. It was demonstrated that the compatibility between cellulose and epoxy resin could be maintained due to partial encapsulation resulting in an improvement in epoxy composite mechanical properties. This work was unique because it w...

Synergistic toughening of hard, nacre-mimetic MoSi2 coatings by self-assembled hierarchical structure

Like many other intermetallic materials, MoSi2 coatings are typically hard, but prone to catastrophic failure due to their low toughness at ambient temperature. In this paper, a self-assembled hierarchical structure that closely resembles that of nacre (i.e., mother of pearl) was developed in a MoSi2-based coating through a simple, yet cost-effective, depostion technique. The newly formed coati...
